Sandra Wellborn (newsletter editor), husband Walt, daughter Jamie and friend Jimmy recently spent two wonderful weeks in Ireland, staying at the Adair Manor Villas. Here are a few photos:
We did not see a great number of these thatched-roofed homes in Ireland, although those we did see were fantastic. This one is is in the small village of Adair
Typical ruins found all over Ireland
The Adair Manor Castle - home of one of the finest golf courses in Ireland.
The world-famous Cliffs of Moher. Absolutely breath-taking. The day was very misty, so the photo is not as sharp as we would like.
The front door to St. Mary’s Cathedral. Very humbling.
OBITUARIES
Obituaries are the saddest of all to report. Heartfelt sympathies go out to all who must go through the ache of losing a loved one.
James Edward Starrett, 88, passed away Wednesday, June 23, 2010, after a short illness.
Funeral, June 28, 2010 at First Baptist Church. Interment: Moore Memorial Gardens. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Arlington Independent School District Scholarship Foundation, the Boys and Girls Club of Arlington and Mission Arlington. Each held a special place in his heart.
James was born May 24, 1922, to Edward M. and Neugie Bowen Starrett in Reilley Springs, Hopkins County. After graduating at 15 from Reilly Springs High School and wanting to continue his baseball career, he transferred to Picton High School and played an additional year of ball for Picton! After serving in the Army Air Force from 1942 to 1946, James entered East Texas State College, now Texas A&M University-Commerce, where he earned his B.S. degree in business and an M.S. degree in school administration. After marrying Ada Buell in 1951, James taught school in Como, Texas, and then moved into school administration with the Pleasant Grove schools. Joining the Arlington Independent School District in 1956, as vice principal of Ousley Junior High in 1959, he was promoted to an administrative position as director of special services for the entire school district.
After many years in administration, he returned to his first love of teaching and helping mold the youth of Arlington. He served as principal of Bess Rankin Elementary School and later the Tom and Maude Foster Elementary School. Upon his retirement in 1983, he continued to mentor many of the young teachers who had worked with him and for him during his years with the Arlington ISD. His door was always open and he was only a phone call away when they needed a good listener. In 1987 the Arlington Independent School District opened a new elementary school at 2675 Fairmont Drive in Grand Prairie and honored James by naming the new facility, James E. Starrett Elementary School. James considered himself a “lifetime” member of the First Baptist Church of Arlington, which he attended for 54 years. Many of those years he served as a greeter in a place close to his heart, the children’s wing of the church, where he not only greeted the children and their parents, but visited and took part in their Sunday school classes. James enjoyed sports and continued to attend high school football and baseball games at every school in the Arlington ISD. He especially loved baseball and after retirement was seen for years at the old Arlington Baseball Park, assisting in numerous departments with a group of his former teaching buddies. Other than sports, his three grandchildren were the love of his life and he was happiest when they came to visit.
He will be sorely missed by his “Rise and Shine” morning coffee group.
Survivors: His wife, Ada; son, Steve Starrett of Sunset; daughter, Laura Bogard of Houston; grandchildren, Jesse and Dalton Starrett of West Jordan, Utah, and Blair Bogard Kveton and husband, Craig of Damon; a sister, Ragene Moore of Houston; and numerous nieces, nephews, in-laws and friends.

Michael Lee Gore (1937 - 2010) (Bonnie Sue Beebe Gore’s husband)

Michael Lee Gore passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Tuesday, May 11, 2010, at the age of 72 after a courageous five-year fight with multiple health problems.
Mike was born in Shelbyville, Ind., on Aug. 13, 1937, to James and Catherine Gore. The Gore family relocated to Arlington when Mike was just 4. He graduated in 1955 from Laneri Catholic High School, from which he still maintains many friendships. Much to his mother’s dismay, Mike then joined the U.S. Navy where he served for three years, 10 months and 11 days, as he liked to tell others. He qualified for submarine service, serving on the USS Chivo. Following his discharge from the service, Mike attended Arlington State College for three years and then received a marketing degree from North Texas State University. Securing the first step in his career prior to finishing college, Mike joined IBM’s office supply division, selling a product that some might remember as a typewriter. After five years with IBM, Mike joined Merrill Lynch, from where he retired in 1999 as an assistant vice president and financial consultant. In 1964 he married Bonnie Sue Beebe, Miss Arlington of 1962. She was his beloved wife for 45 years. He always said that the happiest days of his life were when his children, Jennifer and Jamey, were born. Among many volunteer efforts he helped to start the Most Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and supported fundraising for the Bishop Cassata Learning Center. What Mike adored most was family, friends and making numerous kind gestures for others. Mike will be deeply missed by all and will remain in our hearts forever.
Survivors: His wife, Bonnie Gore; daughter, Jennifer Patton and husband, David; son, Jamey Gore and wife, Shauna; and adored grandchildren, Kenzie Lea and Cason James Gore. Other survivors include “like-a-daughter,” Jacqui Brownfield and husband, David; sister-in-law, Mary Jo Mason; niece, Sherri Pebbles; nephew, John Schwalbe; and many great-nieces and great-nephews.
